Things to do on holidays in Hanoi
Wander the Old Quarter. Its narrow streets were once organised by trade, and some still are: Hang Gai is Silk Street and Hang Bac is Silver Street. Come for the shopfronts, merchants’ tube houses and small temples, and stay for the street food.
Join a street food tour. A guide takes the guesswork out of ordering. Expect pho (beef noodle soup), bun cha (grilled pork with noodles), banh mi (filled baguettes) and egg coffee, a sweet, custardy drink invented in Hanoi.
Circle Hoan Kiem Lake. Cross the red Huc Bridge to Ngoc Son Temple, then watch the morning tai chi crowd. At weekends, the streets around the lake close to traffic, which makes it a pleasant place to stroll in the evening.
See a water puppet show. This uniquely northern Vietnamese art form is performed in a pool, with a live folk orchestra. It is short, charming and easy to fit in before dinner.
Step inside the Temple of Literature. Founded in 1070, it was Vietnam’s first national university and is one of the calmest corners of the city.
Shop at Dong Xuan Market. One of Hanoi’s biggest covered markets is the place for silk scarves, handicrafts and gifts, with food stalls to fuel the haggling.
Add a day trip. Ninh Binh’s limestone landscapes are about two hours away by road, and Ha Long Bay is a long day trip or, better, an overnight cruise.
When to go: Hanoi holidays by season
Hanoi has four distinct seasons, and the best time depends on whether you value weather, price or festivals. Autumn and spring are the most comfortable; summer is the cheapest.
Spring (March to April). Mild, bright and green, with temperatures that suit walking all day. This is one of the two best windows for sightseeing, and prices reflect it.
Summer (May to August). Hot, humid and often above 30°C, with afternoon downpours. In return, you get the lowest prices, fewer visitors and the strongest value in cheap holidays to Hanoi. Pack a light rain jacket and plan indoor stops for the afternoons.
Autumn (September to November). Widely considered the best season: clear skies, lower humidity and golden evenings. Hanoi holidays in 2026 are still bookable for late autumn and December departures, and demand builds from late October, so book early.
Winter (December to February). Winter holidays in Hanoi suit travellers who prefer cool weather to heat. Days are typically around 20°C with cooler nights, and the skies can be grey and drizzly in February, so bring a jacket for evenings. Christmas and Lunar New Year push prices up. For Hanoi holidays in 2027, aim for March or April if you want settled spring weather, or October and November for the autumn sweet spot.
Where to stay in Hanoi
Pick the hotel for the neighbourhood and the experience as much as the star rating.
Sofitel Legend Metropole Hanoi. This 1901 landmark in the French Quarter is the benchmark for luxury Hanoi holidays. Beyond the elegant rooms, guests can tour the wartime bunker beneath the hotel.
Hilton Hanoi Opera. A polished five-star beside the Opera House, handy for the lake, galleries and the city’s best café streets.
Lotte Hotel Hanoi. Modern and tall, with a high-floor bar, a pool and a spa. The sunset views over the city are the main draw.
Hanoi La Siesta Hotel & Spa. A small, warmly run Old Quarter hotel blending Vietnamese design with modern comforts, plus a spa and rooftop bar. It puts you in the middle of the street food scene.
Grand Plaza Hanoi and JM Marvel Hotel & Spa. Reliable, well-equipped options when you want comfort and facilities without the top-end price.

Frequently Asked Questions
How much do holidays to Hanoi cost from the UK?
Seven-night package holidays to Hanoi with Zippy start from £1,385 per person, rising to £2,765 for the Sofitel Legend Metropole. Price depends on the hotel, departure date and UK airport.
Are there direct flights from the UK to Hanoi?
Yes. Vietnam Airlines flies non-stop from London Heathrow to Hanoi in about 11 hours 45 minutes. Other UK airports usually need one or two stops.
Do UK citizens need a visa for Hanoi?
Not for stays of up to 45 days. British passport holders can visit Vietnam visa-free for tourism, but BNO passport holders need a visa. For longer stays, apply for an e-visa (up to 90 days) on Vietnam’s official portal, and check the FCDO’s travel advice before you go.
How many nights should I spend in Hanoi?
Seven nights suits first-time visitors: three or four in Hanoi, then two or three at Ha Long Bay or Ninh Binh. Fewer than five nights feels rushed.
Are there all-inclusive holidays to Hanoi?
Rarely. Hanoi hotels usually sell bed and breakfast rather than full-board all-inclusive. Zippy’s packages bundle flights, hotel, breakfast, visa and transfers in one price, and our team can suggest hotels and extras with more meals.
Can I combine Hanoi with Ha Long Bay or other parts of Vietnam?
Yes. Zippy Holidays can add an overnight Ha Long Bay cruise, Ninh Binh, Sapa, or beach time in Da Nang and Hoi An. Call us to tailor your route.
Should I visit Hanoi during Tet in 2027?
Tet falls on 6 February 2027. Hanoi is festive, but many restaurants and shops close for the first few days, and flights and hotels cost the most. Travel a week or two either side for full opening hours.
Is Hanoi safe for UK visitors?
Yes, Hanoi is generally safe for tourists. The main risks are petty theft and heavy traffic, so keep bags zipped, cross roads slowly, and use licensed taxis or ride-hailing apps.
What currency do I need, and is tipping expected?
Vietnam uses the dong (VND). Carry cash for street food and markets; cards work in hotels and larger restaurants. Tipping is not expected, but rounding up for good service is appreciated.
Is my Hanoi holiday financially protected?
Yes. Flight-inclusive Zippy holidays are ATOL protected (ATOL 3853, Brightsun Travel (UK) Limited). You receive an ATOL Certificate when you pay, so check that it lists everything you booked.
